Revolution in Education

New trends in education due to the COVID-19 pandemic can be described as well-known, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!”

The ongoing pandemic has forced us to drastically change the way we work, learn, connect with others, or spend our free time. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced schools and universities to bring their courses online. Around 90 percent or 1.5 billion of primary, secondary, and tertiary students in the world are no longer able to go to school physically. So, teachers, students, and their parents worldwide are going through very similar challenges when it comes to education.

But, can we turn this unfortunate situation in something good and positive, when it comes to education?

The adoption of online teaching in recent months has been revolutionary. New short-term solutions were developed, so many schools have decided to start a new school year either with a combined in-school and online model or switch to distance learning altogether.

For most students and their teachers, switching entirely from in-person to online instructions and lessons seemed a bit overwhelming. However, remote learning includes useful tools for student engagement and teacher training, and as such, has the potential to enhance education.

How to Get the Most of Distance Learning?

While these days of social distancing and distance learning may seem isolating and depressing, the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic uncovered new opportunities for change and growth in education. It is reasonable to expect a new education model to emerge once the COVID-19 pandemic has passed by.

Distance learning programs and platforms can be accessed from school or home. Digital learning programs encourage kids to develop interests and passion for learning and expand their knowledge, but they also allow the whole family to be included in the learning process.

Online-based teaching and learning can make the learning process more pleasant and fun than traditional classroom-based education. Distance learning allows the teachers to access various interactive and practical lesson plans that spark interest in learning and promote critical thinking.

Yes, modern hi-tech resources do come with many potential risks. However, studies have shown that digital technologies can prod creativity and enhance problem-solving skills in young children. Research shows that technology may promote language and communication skills, boost self-esteem, and help children develop new skills, particularly in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) field.

Kids are flexible and open to imaginative possibilities provided by technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Digital STEM resources offer access to information and interactive opportunities to learn about science, technology, engineering, and math disciplines in a fun and engaging way.

Educational applications for tech devices can help young learners focus their attention, practice new skills through repetition, explore ideas and create things, and learn and complete tasks through trial and error, removing classroom-specific stress.

Nevertheless, digital resources used in distance learning require careful integration. As parents and teachers, we need to help young learners navigate the world of technology responsibly and safely. By teaching children how to access information, manage their time for learning, and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, you are helping them get the most of digital resources and reach their educational goals.
